As summer winds down, the school year comes into focus, and for many neurodivergent families, this transition can be both exciting and overwhelming.
At Ausome Kids Connections, we recognize that the back-to-school season is more than just buying backpacks and supplies; it’s about preparing our kids mentally, emotionally, and socially for success in environments that may not always cater to their unique needs.
Here’s how you can make this year a more empowered one for your child:
1. Start with a Conversation
Check in with your child about how they’re feeling. Are they nervous? Excited? Anxious? Giving them space to share (in their own way) builds trust and emotional security.
2. Create a Visual Routine
Whether your child thrives with picture schedules, color-coded calendars, or morning checklists, visuals help reduce anxiety by providing a sense of structure. We’ll be releasing our free printable Back-to-School Checklist soon. Stay tuned!
3. Partner with the School Team
Reach out early to your child’s teacher, intervention specialist, or IEP team. Share what works, what doesn’t, and any changes since last school year. You are your child’s #1 advocate: your voice matters.
4. Practice Self-Regulation Strategies
Revisit calming techniques like deep breathing, sensory breaks, or fidget tools. Make these strategies part of your child’s daily routine so they’re second nature when stress rises at school.
5. Build a Support System
You don’t have to do this alone. Join one of our parent support groups, connect with other families, and receive real-time encouragement from people who truly understand.
This school year, let’s lead with love, advocate with confidence, and embrace every child’s brilliance.
We're here to walk with you every step of the way.
“Celebrating Small Wins and Big Connections This Summer”
As summer rolls in, we're reminded that growth doesn't always come in giant leaps — sometimes, it shows up in the smallest, most beautiful ways. A smile during a sensory play day. A parent finally feeling heard. A high-five after trying something new.
At Ausome Kids Connections, June is all about building on that energy. We’re preparing for two amazing events — our Family Picnic on July 19th and our Back-to-School Supply Giveaway on August 8th — and the excitement is already growing!
This month, we also welcomed new volunteers, started prepping IEP workshops for parents, and received our first corporate sponsorship (more on that soon 👀). Each of these moments brings us closer to our mission: creating spaces where every child belongs and every family feels supported.
To all the families and supporters who walk this journey with us — thank you. Your presence, your kindness, and your belief in our kids makes everything possible.
Here’s to a summer full of connection, inclusion, and joy.
With love and gratitude,
Tara Smith-Rowley
